Last week we were alarmed to learn that officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) intentionally withheld a damning report from the public that provided conclusive evidence that GMO salmon pose a serious threat to endangered Atlantic salmon if accidentally released into the wild. It is appalling that a federal agency would knowingly hide information from the American public on something as important as our food safety.
Join us in telling the FDA to reject GMO salmon and demand that all transgenic food animals are labeled. Act today, there's no telling what else AquaBounty and the FDA are also hiding!
Here is a sample of the comments that we will send in on your behalf to the FDA. Please add your own comments to make your statement even more powerful.
RE: Docket No. FDA-2010-N-0385
Labeling of AquAdvantage genetically engineered salmon
Dear [Decision Maker]
CC: Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, FDA; Deputy Commissioner of Foods Michael Taylor, FDA; Secretary Tom Vilsack, USDA; Secretary Sebelius, Dept. of Health and Human Services; President Obama
I urge you to reject the approval of AquaBounty's transgenic (GMO)
salmon and require labeling of all GMO food products, especially
transgenic food animals.
As the first transgenic species to be intended for human consumption,
AquaBounty's GMO fish has failed to meet the most basic requirements of
peer-reviewed scientific standards. Unfortunately, the FDA has failed to
require rigorous independent scientific testing
to adequately protect the safety of human health, wild fish populations
and the environment.
It
is unacceptable that consumers continue to be denied their right to
know what's in their food and how it's produced. Also, under current
law,
these genetically engineered salmon would not have to be labeled,
therefore leaving consumers in the dark about what they are eating.
As
such, AquaBounty's GMO salmon should be rejected to protect consumer
and environmental safety and the FDA must mandate the labeling of all
GMO food products, including all transgenic food animals.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
