A copy of your letter of support will be delivered to Governor Malloy, Speaker Sharkey
Dear Governor Malloy and Speaker Sharkey,
I'm outraged over the recent amendment to the House bill (HB 6527) to label GMOs in Connecticut. Last week the Connecticut Senate heroically passed a GMO labeling bill by a vote to 35 to 1. Tragically, in response, Governor Malloy (D-CT) and Speaker of the House Brendan Sharkey (D-Hamden) intentionally forced a weak amendment on a House version of a GMO labeling bill that gutted any serious labeling of GMOs in the state. It's outrageous that for the second year in a row Gov. Malloy and Speaker Sharkey have worked together to stop serious efforts to get a strong GMO labeling bill passed in Connecticut.
I encourage you to support strong legislation that would label genetically engineered foods in Connecticut. This is a time for courage and leadership in Connecticut and I'm watching closely to see who will stand up for me and my family.
Already, more than 60 other countries around the world inform their citizens if their food has been genetically engineered in a laboratory with simple labels, and it's time that we share that basic right. If the same companies can label foods containing GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in Russia, China and South Africa, I believe they should label them in Connecticut as well.
Labeling of genetically engineered foods is a reasonable and common sense proposal and I'm asking you to support a strong GMO labeling bill because parents in Connecticut should know what's in the food they're feeding their families.
Polls regularly show that more than 90% of Americans want labeling of genetically engineered foods, and a 2011 poll found that GMO labeling has broad bipartisan support, with 89% of Republicans, 90% of Independents and 93% of Democrats favor GMO labeling in the U.S.
Join thousands of mothers, farmers and advocates in helping Connecticut lead the way on labeling of genetically engineered foods, because we have a right to know what's in the food that we're eating and feeding our families.
