Don't let Monsanto & Corrupt Corporate Organic Kill GMO Labeling
Right now we’re being betrayed in Washington D.C. by a group of donation-hungry Senators and a handful of corrupt corporate organic companies that have just brokered an outrageous deal behind our backs in an effort to kill mandatory GMO labeling.
Just days before Vermont’s historic first-in-the-nation bill that's scheduled to go into effect this Friday, July 1st, an unholy alliance for corporate interests has crafted an outrageous corporate sellout by Monsanto, Just Label It, the Organic Trade Association, Stonyfield, Smucker's, Organic Valley and Whole Foods who are desperately trying to trample our basic democratic rights to protect their corporate profits.
Thanks to Monsanto and this corrupt cabal of organic executives all the provisions of the new bill are optional and would exempt 85% of GMOs planted today, including those from all of Monsanto's Roundup Ready GMO seeds. This bill is essentially a "Non-labeling" bill, but provides Monsanto and America’s most corrupt food companies the chance to continue to avoid GMO labels, while keeping the doors open for a flood of campaign cash from the likes of Monsanto, DuPont, Pepsi, Smucker’s and General Mills.
Last night, the Senate voted 65-32 to limited debate on the Senate floor and kill mandatory GMO labeling. Final VOTE expected this evening.
Let Vermont's historic GMO labeling bill stand! 64 other countries label GMOs, why not America? Join us in making a call! And take 30 seconds to call the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121.
Your Senators, the FDA and President Obama will receive a copy of your letter. Please join us today!
Dear President Obama, Senators and the FDA,
As your constituent and a supporter of Food Democracy Now!, I am writing today because I support mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food and I'm outraged that U.S. Senators would even consider preempting Vermont's historic GMO labeling bill and trample on the rights of America's mothers, farmers and children in an effort to appease America's most corrupt food companies so they can keep hiding what's in our food. Let Vermont's historic GMO labeling bill stand!
In addition, I want to make it abundantly clear Just Label It and the Organic Trade Association do not represent me or my family in our fight for common sense mandatory GMO labeling. I am counting on you as my Senator to protect my rights as my representative in DC. The issue of mandatory GMO Labeling has demonstrated consistently in public polls to have 90% support. It is time for our Congress to stand up to corporate corruption of our food supply and give the People what they have demanded.
Already, 64 other countries around the world inform their citizens if their food has been genetically engineered with simple labels. It's time that Americans share that basic right!
My friends, family and I are paying attention to the vote on this important issue.
